Furthermore, recent studies have shown that chewing causes activation of various brain regions, including prefrontal cortex (Onozuka et al, J Dent Res 81, 2002). However, little is known about the processes underlying these chewing effects. Using fMRI, we therefore examined the effect of chewing on brain activities during working memory task. The subjects used were twenty to thirty aged healthy adults, being conducted continuously to N-back working memory task, with chewing gum intermittently. N-back working memory task, with different difficulties, were prepared. Subjects were instructed click a mouse button, when they recognized a letter that had been presented two to four trials ago. Immediately after completion of MRI scan, each subject was asked to evaluate the attention level using the visual analog rating scale (VAS). Gum, without odors and taste, was used to remove effects other than chewing. Gradient echo planar imaging and anatomical images were acquired by means of a wholebody 3-T MRI system (Excite, GE Medical Systems). The results showed that both the percentage of correct response and the attention level using VAS were gradually decreased, being a parallel relationship between the response and trials. However, these changes were attenuated by chewing. Furthermore, chewing increased the BOLD signals in the prefrontal area, including the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, during N-back working memory task. These results suggest that chewing may accelerate the process of working memory, consequently enhancing cognitive performance.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10005_description_6":{"attribute_name":"会議概要(会議名, 開催地, 会期, 主催者等)","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_description":"Neuroscience 2006","subitem_description_type":"Other"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"metadata only access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_14cb"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Hirano, Yoshiyuki"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674692","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Obata, Takayuki"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674693","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Nonaka, Hiroi"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674694","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Tomiyasu, Moyoko"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674695","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Kashikura, Kenichi"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674696","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Ikehira, Hiroo"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674697","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"et.al"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674698","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"平野 好幸","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674699","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"小畠 隆行","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674700","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"野中 博意","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674701","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"富安 もよこ","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674702","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"柏倉 健一","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674703","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"池平 博夫","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"674704","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"conference object","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_c94f"}]},"item_title":"Effects of chewing on the prefrontal cortical activity in working memory processing: An fMRI study","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Effects of chewing on the prefrontal cortical activity in working memory processing: An fMRI study"}]},"item_type_id":"10005","owner":"1","path":["28"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2006-11-07"},"publish_date":"2006-11-07","publish_status":"0","recid":"68751","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Effects of chewing on the prefrontal cortical activity in working memory processing: An fMRI study"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-05-15T20:22:32.860104+00:00"}
