The objective of the present study is to explain this difference in food choice between the collembolan species.\nWe examined the effects of surface occurring hair-like cells, called cystidia, of S. ohshimae on survival of the collembolans C. denisana and M. pilosa and the feeding portion of M. pilosa within a fruit-body.  Cystidium removal experiments showed that cystidia were capable of killing both the collembolan species by contact.  Further experiments showed that M. pilosa was able to survive a short time contact with cystidia.  In the field, M. pilosa fed frequently on the interior of S. ohshimae.  These results suggest that M. pilosa was easily able to consume the killer mushroom by mining.
