内容記述 | Total iodine intake from drinking water is important from a public health viewpoint. However, not so many iodine data in freshwater environments have been reported. Recently, determination of total iodine has been easily carried out using ICP-MS; however, limited number of people have easy access to this instrument. Thus, in this study, suitable measurement conditions for total soluble iodine in river water were examined to provide more favourable circumstances for users, especially in terms of sample storage conditions and holding times. The results showed that addition of tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide to filtered samples kept iodine in solution under room temperature conditions. However, it should be noted that precipitation might occur by addition of alkaline reagent. Besides, it was not always necessary to add alkaline reagents to the samples; for example, when samples were stored at 5C without their addition, measured total iodine concentrations did not change for 5-6 months. Under the ICP-MS measurement conditions, total iodine determination in 25 major rivers in Japan was carried out. The iodine concentrations in the water samples ranged from 0.12 to 34.5 ng/mL, with an average of 2.99 ng/mL. The typical detection limit in solutions was between 0.01-0.05 ng/mL.
