In addition we discuss issues related to interactions between proton beams and tissues such as relative biological effectiveness (RBE) around and beyond the Bragg peak.\nWe also review some proton beam facilities and their components including ion sources, accelerators, irradiation system, planning system and positioning system and so on. Furthermore, we delineate a picture of the future of proton beam therapy.\n\\nResults\nProton beam therapy is expected to be a promising method for offering the superior quality of life to patients. The number of proton facilities has been increasing over the world. However, there are some issues to be solved such as clinical performance compared to other methods such as IMRT, reduction of building and maintenance costs and human resources. There are coming some new technologies and ideas to solve these problems.\n\\nConclusion\nRadiotherapy including proton beam therapy shows promise for the treatment of patients with cancers from the viewpoint of quality of life.
