The presence of thorium and uranium and their decay products in minerals such as monazites, ilmenite, rutile, silimanite and zircon result in enhanced natural background radiation fields in the deposit areas are widely known as high background radiation area (HBRA). Monazite is one of the principal sources of rare earth elements (REEs) and present in the continental crust. Thus it is necessary to facilitate data on NORM and HBRAs simultaneously to predict radiation patterns in the environment to increase awareness. In this paper, we have measured 232Th and 238U as well as REEs in various surface soil samples near Chhatrapur situated in southern part of Orissa state, India, a high background area. Soil samples showed enrichment with La, Ce and Nd with Th, a characteristic feature of monazite origin. There was also enrichment of TiO2 which indicates presence of rutile in those samples. These studies show high natural radioactivity and external gamma dose in soil samples. Air particulate samples were collected and shows the presence of thorium which is inhaled by inhabitants. This will help us to study internal dose estimation in those areas., International Conference on RADIOECOLOGY & ENVIRONMENTAL RADIOACTIVITY - Environment & Nuclear Renaissance}, title = {ACCURATE MEASUREMMENT OF NATURALLY OCCURRING RADIONUCLIDES IN NORM SAMPLES AROUND A HIGH RADIATION BACHGROUND AREA IN INDIA}, year = {2011} }
