The neural stem cells are present in developmental brain during the fetal period, which grow and differentiate for neurogenesis. In present study found that the neural stem cells are present in specific regions of adult brain. Therefore radiation exposure during the fetal period leads to disturbances in development of the brain and can induce microcephaly or anencephalia. In addition, a recent study shows that radiation influence the cognitive function in adult brain. Those suggest that radiation may affect the neural stem cells related with forming the neurotransmission. Here we investigated the effects of the X-irradiation on the neural stem cells, prepared from mouse embryonic stem (ES) cells by the Neural Stem Sphere (NSS) method. The proliferation of the neural stem cells cultured with fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) was dose-dependently inhibited by X-irradiation. As for gene expression, nestin and musashi-1 was maintained. It is suggested that the quality of neural stem/precursor cells may be kept.
