Although molecular events in the cellular response to high-dose-rate radiation exposure have been fully investigated, effects of long-term exposure to low-dose-rate radiation remain unclear. Here, two experimental models, which can be performed using long-term, low-dose rates irradiation, are presented. One is a model using mice. Protein expression was analyzed by two-dimensional electrophoresis in livers from mice irradiated for 485 days at low-dose-rates of 0.04mGy/day, 0.86mGy/day and 17 mGy/day (total doses of 0.02 Gy, 0.4Gy and 8 Gy, respectively). One of the proteins that showed marked changes in expression was identified as rhodanese (thiosulfate sulfurtransferase). Rhodanese is a detoxification enzyme, probably related to the regulation of antioxidative function. Its functions will be discussed with results of changes of antioxidative proteins, such as superoxide dismutase. Green soybean plants as another experimental model were used for evaluation of radiation effects on plants with low-dose-rates(0.02Gy/day, 0.06 Gy/day and 0.2 Gy/day)for 25 days. Though the gamma field, which is located in Hitachiohmiya, Ibaraki, has been usually used for breeding of plants, this facility is a convenient tool to irradiate plants for a long period.
