In the first year of this\nstudy, aiming to irradiate the lung or the urinary bladder of mice with\ncarbon-ion, new type of collimators was constructed.\nMaterials and methods --- C3H/HeNrs and C57BL/6J, 8-week-old female mice\nwere used through experiments. The position of the target, either lung or\nbladder, was confirmed by x-ray photographs. Also, the absorbed dose at the\ntarget was confirmed using photoluminescence dosimeter (PLD) and ionization\nchamber. Exposures were conducted using horizontal carbon-12 beams with 290\nMeV/u at a dose rate of approximately 3 Gy/min within the 6-cm spread-out\nbragg peak (SOBP). Gamma-rays were used as reference beam with new\ncollimators. To evaluate the effects of C-ion irradiation on lungs,\npathological changes and immunohistochemical stainings for CD44 and Bak at 6\nhr, day16, 28 and 56 after thoracic irradiation were analyzed. To evaluate\nthe adverse effects on the bladder,cystometry and pathological evaluation\nwere performed.The total RNA was extracted from irradiated tissues, which\nwere removed on day1,4,8,15,29,60,90,150,240 and 360 after irradiation for\nmicroarray analysis to elucidate the molecular response to irradiation.\nResults --- The number of CD44 and Bak positive cells in the irradiated lungs\nwere changed after irradiation.
