However, the histological appcarance of the reparative cartilage in human has not been adequately documented in the literature ,because only invasive techniques such as biopsy were used to evaluate it. A noninvasive technique for evaluating the detail of reparative cartilage fas been needed. Recently,a new MR imaging technique called delayed gadolinium-enhaced MR imaging of cartilage(dGEMRIC) has been developed as a sensitive and specific method for monitoring glycosaminoglycans (GAGs). which is critical for the mechanical support function of cartilage . The basis of dGEMRIC is  that GAGs are negatively charged in the cartilage matrix due to abundant carboxyl and sulfate groups that are ionizsd at physiologic pH.
