In 1961, NIRS started to use a Van de Graff accelerator (Model KN3000, High Voltage Engineering) for PIXE (Particle Induced X-ray Emission) analysis that was operated as a device for pre-tumor therapy with neutron and finally discarded in 1997. In March 1999, an electrostatic accelerator, HVEE Tandetron, was installed in the Electrostatic Accelerator Building for PIXE analysis. PIXE analysis is a trace analytical method, which has the advantage of simultaneous determination of elemental concentrations in a small specimen without any chemical separation by measuring characteristic X-rays of elements induced by accelerated charged nuclear particles such as protons.
