The upper limit of the dose estimation by calculation with the linear-quadratic formula of dicentric and ring chromosomes (Dic and Ring) in conventional metaphase analysis is equivalent to a whole-body dose of 8 Gy gamma-rays (1). Furthermore, after high dose exposure (>5-10 Gy), the number of lymphocytes is reduced and the cell cycle is delayed to reach the metaphase. Therefore, it becomes difficult to estimate such high doses as over 8 Gy.\n In Tokai-mura criticality accident that occurred on September 30, 1999, three workers on the site were severely exposed to neuron and gamma-rays. The drastically reduced number of the lymphocytes indicated that the whole-body dose of radiation that they had been exposed to was unprecedentedly high. A new biodosimetry based on scoring drug-induced prematurely condensed ring chromosomes (PCC-R) that we developed just before the accident was applied to these cases (2).
