The objects of this study is to evaluate the changes of MR findings after the heavy iron therapy. METHOD AND MTERIALS: A total of 26 patients with chordoma in neck or sacrum were investigated for changes of MR findings in regular interval after heavy iron therapy. The patients were followed up for more than 1 year after the therapy. RESULTS: Before the heavy ion therapy, almost all of the chordoma had high intensity on T2 weighted MR image and were moderately stained after contrast media infusion on T1 weighted MR image. Less than 10% of the cases of the chordoma had larger size than before the heavy ion therapy. Almost all of the tumors were very slowly reduced or showed no regrowth. The T2 weighted MR image showed more inhomogeneous intensity after the heavy ion therapy. Almost all of the chordoma had less staining after contrast media infusion on the T1 weighted image in relatively early stages after the heavy ion therapy regardless of any signal intensity on the T2 weighted image. CONCLUSIONS: Chordoma in neck or sacrum responded well to the heavy iron therapy. Change of enhanced T1 weighted MR image and T2 weighted MR image after the therapy represents therapeutic effect. The tumor size change is slow.}, title = {MR imaging of Chordoma after Heavy Ion Therapy.}, year = {2000} }
