However, the geochemical and biogeochemical cycles of iodine are not sufficiently known. This is mainly due to the lack of analytical data on the iodine concentrations. We have developed analytical methods of iodine in geological and biological materials using ICP-MS and NAA. Iodine was at first separated from the sample by heating (1000-1100) and collected in TMAH (tetramethyl ammonium hydroxide) trap solution or activated charcoal (made from phenol resin). The trap solution was used for the determined of iodine by ICP-MS and activated charcoal was used for NAA.\nWe have analyzed iodine in various kinds of soil, sediments and rock samples and data were used to estimate the distribution and cycling of iodine in the environment.
