These phenomena could be explained by the different local energy deposition as illustrated by the track structure composed of core with high-density ionizations and penumbra with scattered delta-rays. We discussed the relationship between the track structure and cell death in mammalian cells or 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) formation by different ion species with the same LET.
