However, the mechanism of biological actions by heavy ions is not totally understood. We show here that heavy ion irradiation leads to more efficient inhibition of DNA double strand break (DSB) repair in cells than conventional X-irradiation does. Among the two major pathways to repair DNA DSB, the non-homologous end-joining is definitely affected by heavy ion irradiation.
