Asynchronous Chinese hamster V79 cells and human normal fibroblasts NB1RGB were irradiated with carbon ion beam (LET = 30 - 250 keV/um) and Si ion beam (245 keV/um) in monolayer. FCM data showed that more than 80% of the V79 cells were accumulated in G2/M phase from 4 to 12 h with a peak around 5 to 6 h after irradiation of carbon ion beams. The maximum value and the width of the peak increased with irradiation dose. Relative biological effectiveness (RBE) of G2 arrest, calculated from the half value width of the peaks, increased with LET up to 170 keV/um. RBE values for LET higher than 77 keV/um were bigger than those for the cell inactivation. V79 cells showed no G1 arrest. In contrast, NB1RGB showed long G1 arrest and smaller peak of G2 population compared with V79 cells.
