Physical dose should be associated with the relative biological effectiveness at each point. Presently, carbon ion radiotherapy has been carried out at the National Institute Radiological Sciences in Japan and the Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung mbH in Germany. Both facilities take individual approach for the calculation of the RBE value. At NIRS, the classical system LQ Model has been used while the local effect model has been incorporated into the treatment planning system at GSI. The first aim of this study is to explain the RBE model of NIRS by the microdosimetric kinetic model.
