When amifostine was administered intraperitoneally or intravenously to mice, the linewidth of the EPR spectra of the lithium octa-n-butoxy-substituted naphthalocyanine (LiNc-BuO) implanted in the mouse leg muscle decreased. EPR oximetry using a LiNc-BuO probe and EPR oxygen mapping using a triarylmethyl-type probe was useful to quantify pO2 in the tissues of living mice. The result of EPR oximetric imaging showed that administration of amifostine can decrease pO2 in the muscle and also tumor tissues.
