Tumors contain a sub-population of cells with self-renewality and tumorigenicity, ie cancer stem cells. The stromal micro-environment adjacent to epithelial carcinoma cells is fundamentally different from the stroma of normal adult tissues. Although these structures are not fully understood, investigations have begun to open avenues to cancer treatment.
