The assay's validity\nand accuracy were determined among five laboratories following\nthe International Organization for Standardization guidelines.\nBlood samples irradiated at the Armed Forces Radiobiology\nResearch Institute were shipped to all laboratories,\nwhich constructed individual radiation calibration curves and\nassessed the dose to dose-blinded samples. Each laboratory\nconstructed a dose–effect calibration curve for the yield of\ndicentrics for 60Co _ rays in the 0 to 5-Gy range, using the\nmaximum likelihood linear-quadratic model, Y _ c _ _D _\n_D2. For all laboratories, the estimated coefficients of the fitted\ncurves were within the 99.7% confidence intervals (CIs),\nbut the observed dicentric yields differed. When each laboratory\nassessed radiation doses to four dose-blinded blood\nsamples by comparing the observed dicentric yield with the\nlaboratory's own calibration curve, the estimates were accurate\nin all laboratories at all doses. For all laboratories, actual\ndoses were within the 99.75% CI for the assessed dose.
