West Valley was the site of short-lived reprocessing activities (1966-1972), with Rochester located 115 km to the northeast, providing a control site for the study. The selected trees reflect different modes of fluid and nutrient transport in trees, with three species of ring-porous trees (elm, oak and locust), one semi-diffuse (cherry) and one diffuse porous tree (maple).\nThe results show that 129I levels in trees with ring-porous wood, in which hydrologic tissue is localized in the outermost growth ring, are generally well correlated with the expected 129I deposition pattern for the region. In contrast, tree rings of semi-diffuse to diffuse-porous wood, in which hydrologic tissue is disseminated throughout the trunk, show a less well developed 129I signal, probably due to the conduction of iodine ions across annual rings. Iodine concentrations in the tree rings range from 0.04 to 2 mg/kg, 129I/127I ratios from 6x10-10 to 3.8x10-6. Tree bark and the outermost rings show significantly higher 129I concentrations than the wood of the trunk. The 129I/I ratios for bark are very similar to values obtained for surface soil and water at the two localities, while inner rings have ratios similar to those in deeper layers of the soil, reflecting different pathways for 129I deposition and the differences in ambient 129I levels in the atmosphere and deep soil layers. Although ring porous trees preserve the depositional pattern of nuclear releases, rings older than or close to the onset of the nuclear age have 129I/I ratios significantly above the pre-anthropogenic level, suggesting that even in these trees some redistribution of 129I occurs throughout the trunk. Our results indicate that growth rings from ring-porous wood are useful in time-series analyses of regional 129I deposition, yielding reliable information on relative changes in 129I concentrations but requiring caution in the reconstruction of absolute ambient concentrations during any given time.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_8_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"0013-936X","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_access_right":{"attribute_name":"アクセス権","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_access_right":"metadata only access","subitem_access_right_uri":"http://purl.org/coar/access_right/c_14cb"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Rao, Usha"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"429376","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Fehn, Udo"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"429377","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Muramatsu, Yasuyuki"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"429378","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Mcneil, Heather"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"429379","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Sharma, Pankaj"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"429380","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Elmore, David"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"429381","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"村松 康行","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"429382","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"journal article","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"Tracing the history of nuclear release: Determination of 129I in tree rings,","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"Tracing the history of nuclear release: Determination of 129I in tree rings,"}]},"item_type_id":"8","owner":"1","path":["1"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2003-10-10"},"publish_date":"2003-10-10","publish_status":"0","recid":"43158","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["Tracing the history of nuclear release: Determination of 129I in tree rings,"],"weko_creator_id":"1","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-05-16T00:30:35.362731+00:00"}
