The discharge concentration of boron into public water bodies is regulated to be below 10 mg L− 1 under Japan’s Water Pollution Control Law. The current drainage system needs to be supplemented with a compact, efficient, and cost-effective boron removal system to meet the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises. In this study, a powdered adsorbent with high boron affinity was synthesized via radiation-induced graft polymerization using cellulose powder as the base material. This approach enabled the development of a rapid boron removal system by integrating the adsorbent with a spring-type filter. The boron removal performance of the system was evaluated using a 10 mg L− 1 boron solution at a space velocity of 5000 h− 1. The results showed that more than 95% of boron was removed during flow-through up to a bed volume (BV) of 460. The adsorbed amount of boron reached 13 mg of boron per gram of adsorbent, demonstrating high efficiency even under rapid flow conditions. These results indicate that the developed system is highly effective for boron removal in water treatment applications. |
