Spin liquid states have been significant topics in condensed-matter physics. In this study, we investigated possible spin and orbital liquid states in triclinic ilmenite-type CuVO3. Crystal structure refinements revealed Jahn–Teller distortion of Cu2+O6 octahedra, resulting in a characteristic 3dx2–y2 orbital arrangement to form a ferromagnetic dimer interaction. The magnetic properties indicate ferromagnetic interactions; however, no magnetic transitions were observed at temperatures down to 2 K. Other ilmenite-type vanadium oxides showed a long-range order of V–V dimers, whereas CuVO3 did not exhibit a static dimer state; rather, it exhibited a liquid state of V 3d orbitals at low temperatures. The spins and orbitals of distinct elements in the triclinic ilmenite-type CuVO3 behave as liquid states; thus, CuVO3 is a promising quantum spin–orbital compound. |
