Ar ions with 380 keV energy were irradiated onto glassy carbon (GC) substrates at a fluence between 1.0×10^14 and 1.0×10^16 cm^-2 to elucidate the fluence dependence of microstructural changes in GC. The irradiation caused an increase in density at a fluence of up to 1.0×10^16 cm^-2. The lattice constant along the c-axis, derived from the (002) diffraction ring, increases from 0.74 nm to 0.84 nm up to 2.5×10^15 cm^-2 and then decreases to 0.80 nm up to 1.0×10^16 cm^-2. Additionally, an anomalous structural change with a slight orientation along the c-axis was observed. Based on the discrepancy between the density increase and expanded lattice constant, it was concluded that the anomalous reconstruction of the turbostratic graphite structure in the GC with a slight orientation is caused by ion irradiation. |
