Abstract
Purpose
To evaluate the advantage of use of rotating gantry and energy scanning carbon-ion beams for choroidal malignant melanoma and prepare for clinical use.
Materials and Methods
Dose distribution were evaluated by dose-volume histograms and 3D dose distribution.
Quality assurance and control (QA / QC) methods were also evaluated. Linear energy transfer (LET) of energy scanning, accuracy of spot depth, position, and dose were evaluated using an in-house built jig.
Imobilization devices, position confirmation and beam control systems were also checked for treatment.
Results
Evaluation of dose distribution showed improvement in doses to risk tissues compared to passive scattering beams, but with higher maximum dose. The higher maximum dose was evaluated clinically insignificant.
Lower LET was observed in energy scanning. Dose converting for lower energies were offset by XX%. Spot position accuracy was obtained by using rescanning techniques.
Imobilization devices were confirmed to fit in the new treatment room. Position confirmation was possible using a head phantom. Patient monitoring and beam control systems functioned properly with minor modifications.
Conclusion
Energy scanning with the rotating gantry showed to be equal to superior compared to passive scattering. We have successfully constructed a workflow for QA / QC and is ready for clinical application.
