We are developing dedicated brain PET having a helmet detector, in which detectors are arranged on a hemisphere, and an add-on detector for improving sensitivity. We have developed a helmet-chin PET prototype, which is our initial idea to place the add-on detector at chin position. However, the detector at chin position sometimes gave an oppressive feeling to the patient. Meanwhile, our previous study showed the same sensitivity improvement can be achieved by placing the add-on detector at neck position. In this study, therefore, we developed helmet-neck PET by changing the add-on detector position from the chin to neck. Sensitivity measurement showed that the detector at neck had higher effect for improving the sensitivity for the brain region because the detector can be placed closer than that at chin, which requires a margin for the patient safety. In addition, healthy volunteer study using the prototype with 18F-FDG clearly visualized the brain structure. The helmet-neck has promising performance for high sensitivity brain imaging.
