To elucidate molecular mechanisms for the induction of radiation-induced adaptive response through radiation-induced bystander responses, Human non-small lung cancer cells bearing the wild-type p53 were irradiated with heavy ion microbeams in QST-Takasaki. By the analysis of surviving fraction, the phenomenon, “radiation-induced adaptive response” was actually induced in the cells of both 10-cell irradiated and non-irradiated neighboring colonies. The response was almost completely suppressed by the addition of NO scavenger to the medium. Collectively, radiation-induced adaptive response can be induced by radiation-induced, NO-mediated bystander response.
