Understanding the individuals variation in radiation sensitivity at a molecular level may be essential to predict unusual response of normal tissue cells to clinical radiations. Micro array technology has been proved to be a powerful tool for comparing gene expression in normal and disease states and/or for analyzing the response of cells exposed to drugs or unknown physiological conditions. We have studied gene expression profiles of the cultured neonatal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) using the custom-made oligonucleotide microarray, containing 22,500 probes (representing 19,862unique genes), before or/after exposure to 0.1, 2 and 5Gy of X rays and carbon-ion beams. Total RNA was purified from the cells at 1, 3, 6, 12, 18, 24 hours after irradiations. The expression level of some genes was confirmed with a quantative reverse transcription-PCR.
