Radiation therapy is a cancer treatment in which a high-energy radiation is used to kill cancer cells. The production of hydroxyl radicals and other diffusible radicals is a principal cause of radiation damage to cancer. However, normal cells are affected by radiation therapy as well, and this accounts for the adverse side effects observed in this type of treatment.
Antioxidants exhibit an ability to reduce free radicals generated by radiotherapy, and thereby decrease the effectiveness of the therapy in cancer cells. If the radical scavenging activity of antioxidants is inhibited in cancer cells, they can be used in combination with radiation cancer therapy to reduce the adverse side effects. In this study, we designed a quercetin derivative, whose radical scavenging activity was decreased under acidic conditions such as caner cells. The synthesis and radical scavenging activity of the quercetin derivative will be presented.
