Sludge generated in drinking water treatment plants in the Tohoku and Kanto regions has become contaminated with radiocesium (Cs-134 and Cs-137) released from the 2011 accident at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. If the sludge is reused as a material for potting mixes for home gardens, vegetables grown in the mixes will take up radiocesium. Since sludge contains various size particles, the effect of sludge particle size on the uptake of Cs-137 by leaf vegetables was determined. Active root uptake of Cs-137 was found in the experimental potting mix including powder particles of the contaminated sludge.
