This study was aimed at the elucidation of the characteristics of the long-term effects in mice irradiated during the intrauterine, and puberty period in comparison with those after exposure during the adult period. Female B6C3F1 mice were irradiated during the intrauterine, neonatal, puberty, young adult or middle age adult period with Cs-137 gamma rays. All the mice were allowed to live out their entire life span under a specific pathogen-free condition, and the mean life spen, age-specific mortality and lifetime incidences of the neoplasms were examined for each experimental group. Using lige shortening as a comprehensive measure of long-term effects, the age dependence of susceptibility for long-term effects was analyzed. Mice of the neonatal and puberty periods were shown to be more susceptible to the induction of the overall long-term effects than the mice of the intrauterine and adult period. The temporal variation of the age-specific mortality was apparently influenced by the dose of radiation and the age at irradiation. The analysis of the age-associated change of susceptibility for the induction of neoplasms resulted in the conclusion that the age dependence of susceptibility is inherent for each type of neoplasm. Mice of the late fetal and neonatal period were shown to be highly susceptible to the induction of tumors of the endocrine glands. Statistically significant increase in incidence was detected for the induction of pituitary tumors and ovarian tumors after irradiation at 7 days of age with 10 cGy.
